I am sad to report that two well-respected North Wales photographers have died recently:

Matt Morrow was, from the moment he arrived in Mold Camera Club in about 2012/2013, a strong photographer with a keen appreciation of the outdoors, from Alpine and Snowdonia scenes to action sports, from Moto-Cross to Slalom Canoeing, and was
capable of quietly tackling almost any genre to great effect.
A very modest man, if pushed, he would talk with authority on any of his subjects and his dedication to his own photography and to the Club is evidenced by his distinctions in International Exhibitions, AFIAP (Artiste FIAP), National Exhibitions, (BPE4*), and CPAGB (Credit PAGB).
It will never be the same without Matt in Mold Camera Club and the Eryri Photo Group - his sudden passing has shocked everyone who knew him and our sympathies go out to Sylvia and his family.
Andy Polakowski, Mold CC

Tudur Owen Passed away peacefully at his home LLYS HELEN Croesor on February 18th aged 93 years.
Tudur was a life member of CLWB CAMERA BLAENAU FFESTINIOG He produced some amazing images and was a fantastic asset to the club Public funeral at Bangor crematorium on Thursday March 6th at 9am An event to celebrate Tudur's life to be held at Croesor Gallery on Saturday June 7th at 11am
Dewi Wiliams
Club chairman, Blaenau Ffestiniog CC

Tudur was one of the most respected Photographers in North Wales, working mostly in Black and White prints, with his work being exhibited around the world and published in numerous magazines and books. A member of Deudrath Camera club for a number of years, he then joined Blaenau over 30 years ago. Always willing to talk about photography, especially his favourite genres: nudes and Landscapes.

Competition Secretary

The NWPA suffered a minor - some would say major- crisis earlier this year in that it failed to receive any nominations or volunteers to fulfil the role of Competition Secretary, at one stage it was feared that the NWPA would not be able to field an entry for the 2025 PAGBInter Fed Print Competition and then, thankfully, Peter Humphrys a member of Prestatyn Camera Club stepped up and offered to take on the role of Competition Secretary.
Whilst the selection and organisation of the NWPA 2025 Inter Fed Print entry was very much a team effort Peter now has a good grounding to take the role forward.
A few words from Peter: ―I’m a passionate landscape and seascape photographer, with a particular love for
lighthouses and architectural subjects. My photography journey began in 2021
when I purchased my first DSLR – a Canon 5D Mark IV – and joined my local camera club in Newport, Shropshire. From there, I immersed myself in learning the craft, spending countless hours watching YouTube tutorials to master both the technical and creative sides of photography. As well as attending workshops.
Since then, I’ve been fortunate to receive several accolades, including PI Photographer of the Year, Print Photographer of the Year and Overall Photographer of the Year within the Intermediate Photographers Group.
Photography is more than just a hobby—it’s a way for me to explore the UK, discover new locations and capture the beauty of the world around us. Whether I’m photographing dramatic coastlines, timeless lighthouses or striking architecture, I find great joy in being out with my camera and turning moments into lasting images.
I’m proud to be part of the NWPA team and will give my all to help the organisation grow and thrive.‖
Please join me in offering a huge thank you to Peter for taking on what is viewed as an arduous role, I trust that all NWPA membership will support Peter ongoing by providing material that demonstrates to Great Britain and beyond what talented and skilled photographers reside in North Wales.
Charles Meadows
President
NWPA

Publicity Officer

I am delighted to inform you that following the recent appeal to the membership, the role of “Publicity Officer” has been filled by Chris Evans a member of Rhyl Photographic Society.
If you do not know Chris personally, I am sure that many of you will know of his photographic work.
A short Bio on Chris: After 42 years in the gas industry, he took voluntary redundancy in 2020 and retired to follow his passion for photography.
Chris started taking an interest in photography in 2012 mainly taking photos of motorcycle events with a bridge camera and became a bit more serious in 2016 when he purchased his first DSLR.
Chris‟s main go to genres is B&W architecture and altered reality but he will have a go at anything!
He started entering photographic salons in 2022 and is currently at BPE level 3 and hold‟s AWPF and AFIAP distinctions.
Other interests for Chris are IT/computers, social media, building web pages, motorcycling and walking.
A comment from Chris “I personally think we need to celebrate the success of our membership a lot more than we do, we have some of the best photographers in the UK”

The following is a precis of suggestions that Chris already has in mind for raising the profile and promoting the NWPA:

Promotion

Contact and use Local papers for events such as print battles held in North Wales using before and after the event articles including photos of the event and winners etc.

National Magazines

e.g. Amateur Photographer magazine, enquire about a feature on the NWPA and what it does / affiliated clubs etc.

NWPA Web page

Maybe a write up, small feature on each affiliated club.

NWPA Newsletter

Could it be expanded to contain more information such as links to forthcoming National/ International exhibitions, local events etc and links to the exhibition results post judging as these often contain some very inspirational images and more often than not contain work from several NWPA photographers Newsletter could be posted on the NWPA Facebook page and a copy left in the files section of said page

The "PAGB e-news‟ is a good example to try and emulate it contains plenty of inspirational pictures.

Local Events

Ask for relevant items for inclusion in the following months newsletter via the Facebook page /Newsletter and local club pages this could also be requested by club delegates.

Advertisements

Ask North Wales firms for advertisements for a small fee that would go to the NWPA.

Club Flyers & Events

These could be added to newsletters occasionally with a note asking members to share on social media which has a huge reach, I‟m sure many of us have friends and contacts in many of the club catchment areas so we may entice a few members.

Membership

Attempt to have more membership interaction, ask what they would like to see in the newsletters.

I ask each and everyone of you to get behind and support Chris in bringing the NWPA to the affiliated membership and beyond as well as to bring the membership to the NWPA – it is your NWPA that exists to support you in your photography – whatever the genre, whatever your skill level.

Please join me in wishing Chris all the very best in his endeavours as “Publicity Officer”

Charles Meadows
President
NWPA

INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL - COLWYN BAY - OCTOBER

The Northern Eye Photography Festival is organised by the Oriel Colwyn photography gallery and works in partnership with Aberystwyth's The Eye Festival (which is usually hosted on the even years) to ensure a yearly photography festival in Wales. Our North Wales based biennial photography festival is now in its 6th edition.

Hosted in the town Colwyn Bay on the odd years, we‟re a friendly festival that kind of likes being a little „odd‟, different and non-exclusive with an overarching desire to champion photography and widen it‟s reach.

Our honouring of photography is centred around a core Speaker‟s Weekend, this year held on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th October, and hosted in the historic Theatr Colwyn building, the oldest working theatre in Wales and home of Oriel Colwyn.

Limited numbers of EARLY BIRD tickets are available now:

Full weekend Early Bird ticket - £50 (Student £30)

FESTIVAL EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS

In an important addition to the speakers weekend, our popular FREE festival exhibition programme runs throughout the whole of October. It sees festival exhibitions pop-up across the town in an eclectic range of buildings and public spaces and allows us to playfully share, introduce, and showcase an incredible range of stories and images with the public.

CONWY CAMERA CLUB

Just a quick update on how our plans are progressing as we celebrate our club's 80th Anniversary:

Conwy Cub Photographic workshop: The event has been held with the Conwy cubs, which attracted a very enthusiastic group youngsters who where willing to engage in the workshop and experience handling cameras, plus taking unusual images of reflective light and oil in water. All their images have now been passed to Hazel Stuart ( a 3rd year undergraduate student at Bangor) who will set the images to a piece of music as part of one of her assignments. We will share the outcome with you at the start of the 2025/26 season.

Conwy Camera Club Family Day: A successful family day has been held at Colwyn Bay Zoo where over 60 club members and their relatives attended. Good fun was had by all shooting images of the Zoo's inhabitants plus some Paparazzi shots of our members in action. Again, we will share some images with you at the start of the new season. Thank you Martin for arranging what was a great day.

Conwy Culture Centre: A first set of images of current and past members have been on display at the Culture Centre. The first set of member images have know been replaced with a second set of members images and are on display until around the end of July.

All the images will then be replaced with the 80 Portraits of people (including some members) born through the past 80 years. These images will remain on display through August/September. Please enjoy a visit to the Culture Centre to view the displayed images. Don't forget to sign the visitors book.

Conwy Camera Club Open Day: Plans are progressing for our club's open day at St John's Hall on Saturday 6th September 2025. More detail of the day will be published shortly. Sarah Horrocks is still looking for some volunteers to help within 2 hour slots on the day. If you can help, please contact Sarah. Amateur Camera Club Magazine: Amateur Camera Club have published a piece on Conwy Camera Club (available in newsagents from the 8th July). The piece focuses on our clubs 80th Anniversary and includes a number of images selected by the Amateur Photography editorial staff of members images. Congratulations to all our members who have had an image published within the article. A big thank you to Tanya for all her hard work in conjunction with Amateur Photographer by supplying a group of images for selection within the final publication.

Conwy Camera Club 80th Anniversary Book: Work on developing the history of Conwy Camera Club continues at a pace and is close to a final draft before being past for printing. The book will be published towards the end of 2025.

Story of an Image – ‘The Tree’

The Tree,  Llyn Padarn 11/01/2022 09:45  – Tony Grubb CPAGB BPE2* AFIAP PPSA GPU CR1*

I have been a photographer (sort of) since the late 1960s but they were really only happy snaps taken with a point and shoot. I got my first Proper camera in the late 1970s, a Zenit something and because it was manual I actually started to learn something. I bought my first Canon in the early 1980s and have never used another make since. My first Canon was an AE1 and my last film camera was an A1, in my honest opinion, the best amateur film camera ever made (still got a couple).
I didn’t get my first digital camera until 2007 when I bought a Canon 5D MK 1. When I bought it, I had no idea what a cropped or full frame sensor was and bought it because it seemed to be close to what an A1 was (clueless). The A1 was my favourite camera at the time but it was a film camera and digital seemed to be the thing, so I went digital.
I had upgraded to the 5DMK2 before I finally began to understand all this digital stuff and began to learn a bit more. Then Canon released the 5DSR 50 MP, I’ll have one of those thanks. A very good camera in a studio but not when trying to photograph bikes flying past at silly speeds: it’s only five frames a second too many shots missed. So, time for a professional sports camera. For a Canon owner there is only one choice the EOS 1DX so I bought a second hand 1DX mk1 at about 20fps it was fast enough.
Then Canon released the R5 So I Finally went mirrorless and I don’t need to keep upgrading to another new camera now the R5 will do what the both the DSR and 1dx will do. I finally have camera that I’m not always thinking I wish it would do this or that. I am pleased with the R5.
It was early January when I decided to pay another visit to Llyn Padarn and probably the most photographed  tree in North Wales. I had missed the dawn and it was a bit cloudy anyway. After setting up and taking a few shots I realized that the sky was a bit blown out so I put a 0.6 grad on (it could have been a 0.9, can’t remember) but when I got home and looked at the images I realized that the sky was bit too dark. So, I turned it mono, one of my better decisions.
It is a marmite shot it has been rejected more than it has been accepted. It has had a couple of HC/HM’s and 3 proper Medals a PSA bronze in PSA annual print salon (USA); a salon Gold in Ireland (Digitalna Foto Arhiva circuit 24 in the travel Section); and My BEST so far, a PSA Gold in the Deep Focus print salon in India.
The First salon I entered was Bebington BPE in 2016 I entered seven images and three were disqualified and the rest were slaughtered. It was 6 months before I got an acceptance in a BPE. It was 2022 before I got my BPE1*. I then got my QPSA in March 2019 and my AFIAP in 2021. My PPSA in awaiting approval and I’m hoping to get my EFIAP next year.
This is just for those just starting: don’t expect every image to get accepted. Judges are like chalk and cheese one will like an image another will hate it. Photography is very subjective, especially in salons. I have one image that got an Honourable Mention in its second yet salon never had another acceptance.
I’m a plodder I just plod along at my own pace and eventually I will get there. I am a better photographer than some but compared to others I am utterly rubbish.
Saying all this, I took the plunge and entered prints into PSA run competitions, and last year, had a good year, with this photo. So, I was allowed to enter the photo into the PSA run ‘Print of the Year’ competition. To my utter shock, delight and amazement, I just been informed that my print ‘The Tree’ has been awarded the ‘Best in Show’ monochrome winner for print of the year! I’m still processing my success.
